Gold Medal Embarrassment

Becki and I were watching a particular Olympic event the other day when a particular athlete with a rather unusual name came up for their turn in the event. Becki and I both commented how stupid we thought the name was and placed the blame solely on the parents for making up such a silly name. At one point, one of us probably said "What kind of mother would give their kid a stupid name like that" or something equally insulting towards the mother.

Today, we found out said athlete's mother is in our ward.

Whoops.

So what's the name?

I just heard the Mom is an avid reader of this most public blog -- maybe you can discuss the daughter's name with her in church Sunday!

It's precisely this publicness that makes me not want to reveal the person's name, or even sport. I fear that somehow through the mysteries of PageRank™, my blog will come up first when this person or their mother Googles around for their name. I can't have that happening.

But, the name may or may not rhyme with Pariah Showers.

i can't believe you put this on here! what if we ever get some froiends in our ward and they read this someday? anyway, i'm sure you probably said all that rude stuff and i most likely said, "yeah, it's a little unusual" or something like that.

I don't know how the first name is pronounced, exactly, but from what I observe when applying basic phonetic principles, it doesn't really seem to rhyme with "Pariah".

Honorable mention could have gone to US womens' softball player Crystl Bustos. Handle with care.

Captain gets a cookie for figuring it out. It was my frustration at the disagreement between the spelling and the pronunciation that caused me to even comment about the name in the first place.
